STAR WARS: Eleventh Fleet AU
Hey-hey, I worked, caught a cold, got sick and that’s enough… …so, concept art for the Eleventh Fleet.
Ar'alani and Vah'nya's designs are fairly simple, but the problem with them in particular, and the Chiss in general, is their clothing and style. There are many official references, including those from Legends, but each artist still has his own vision regarding, for example, the shape of the fleet. Somewhere there is a strong homage to the design from the old canon, somewhere it was modernized, and in the latter they added the same “honor's chains”, which look a little strange on the laconic form. It seems to be in the Chiss style, but very impractical.
As a result, I am reworking the design of the expansion and defense fleet uniform, but more on that another time. Let's return to Ar'alani and Vah'nya.
At the beginning of the events of the "Eleventh Fleet", Senior General Ar'alani on his flagship "Vigilant" is increasingly confronted with the Grysks. A year will pass since her last meeting with Thrawn, when the invaders of the Ascendency space will openly attack the Chiss ships.
Such cat and mouse would continue for another year until the disappearance of another Night Dragon class war cruiser, subsequently leading to disaster in the heart of the Chiss Ascendancy. The Senior General will be one of the few superiors who, along with Ba'kif, can survive. Much of this will be down to Vanto and Ronan - unaccounted for variables in the Grysk's plans. The trust placed in Thrawn's "alien protégés" paid off in full.
The Senior General was often accompanied by Senior Navigator Vah'nya. "Vigilant" almost always accepted missions to search for missing navigators. Vah'nya not only guided the ship through the stars and darkness of outer space, but she was much better at rehabilitating rescued navigators, as well as leading the other navigators on the ship. Friendship with Eli played an important role in this.
Because of her "anomaly" as a Navigator who hasn't lost her powers into adulthood, many of the regulations and rules simply don't work for Vah'nya the way they do for other girls. And to be an “anomaly” for Sindikure is a very subtle walking on the edge of a charrik. And yet, to the dissatisfaction of some aristocrats and syndics, the girl manages to balance on it for quite a long time.

Because I’m not entirely sure that I’m right, but I really wanted to think about what this gorgeous grandpa would have looked like during the Thrawn. Ascendency Trilogy. And I also reworked his “chains” and other form elements quite a bit. And yes, I’m more than sure that Thrawn adopted Ba'kif’s “style” in his time.

Omg mimic fan on the wild.. I am yet to catch up w book 2's ending (not that i mind spoilers tho) cuz I'd rather avoid the glitchy mess that's new stuff soon after release, but which chapter of Jealousy did you like the most dude? Also any favorite monsters on it?
oh my god omg amazing question hey. i wont spoil anything but i do recommend playing with limited graphics esp if ur shit cant handle it. its REALLY laggy and incredibly crowded. you might miss out on a few cool model details but its nothing you cant find on a youtube gameplay.
jc2 was peak. anyone who knows me knows that my isamu uchiumi special interest started with jc2. its so beautiful first of all, the graphics arent so heavily detailed that you lag, its a wonderful simplicity that i think was one of the last good things this game ever did. the concept of greed and jealousy being represented in hunger and gluttony, and then revealing to us that the starved-looking worshipper is actually the incredibly jealous senzai, it is GENUINELY the best single piece of symbolism in the mimic, and probably some of the only actually intelligent/profound non-upfront symbolism we get.
i love the ocean, i love fish, my nickname irl has been fish or fishie for years since i used to swim and like fish. i love jellyfish specifically, and i think the jellyfish that you see crossing the bridge into the restaurant (kuishinbo) are gorgeous. like i love them so much.
the gameplay for jc2 was also really fun the first time around, and still is. im autistic about this game and this chapter specifically, since january i mustve completed both normal and nightmare at least 30 times and have all the lanterns (also my favourites. ponpon lantern is so cute i love blue and it spins and bubbles.), so i am VERY biased. isamu is also my favourite character of all time, and i feel like this is where he belonged. id have liked to have seen maybe him growing gills as a gift from the ocean in c1 rather than it simply being his will to live (which is minimal. will expand on this point if you want), as it makes sense for his "in the sea" surname, his home is the sea. i have some genuinely serious analysis of jc2 if anyone is interested lawl
favourite monster is nagisa. i love her to PIECES. i know that all mimic monster designs are barely reworked "inspired" (mostly copied) designs (cough monster X, and enzukai is affectionately referred to as monster E by myself and a few fellow theorists). but holy shit. nagisa. shes so fucking cool. people who ive made to play the mimic have said that her design is incredibly interesting to them, and i think shes brilliant. also isamu was so fucking locked in for that ship bossfight hes the best ever.

and dump some spoilery overall impressions below the cut ⬇
sorry i'm gonna start off with my major criticisms. first is that i wish the two halves of the story were more smoothly integrated. like if the beginning had more foreshadowing, more snippets of lore that would become important later, that kind of thing… it would just make it a more cohesive whole? and i'd rework zoraal ja to facilitate that, i think, because imo he's got super weak characterization;;;
second... i like wut lamat. i really do. but i think the story suffered for how much it put on her shoulders. it made her carry the whole first half of the expansion practically alone and that's just not something many (maybe any) characters can do. it just got tiring how every time the party splits up we get paired with her. and i get that they wanted to shift focus away from the scions we've already spent 10 years with, but it felt like a bit of a mean trick that they sent us to tural with most of them and then they got almost NO attention (aside from g'raha in zone 6 which i really appreciated), so i think letting us spend just a little more meaningful quality time with them instead of so much with wuk lamat would have been nice on two fronts.
but the positives!!!!!!!!!!! maaaaaannnn i loved the later parts of the story to death. especially zone 6. exquisite vibes, and what unique vibes for a "final dungeon." the krile and erenville stuff was beautiful. the incredible lore drops; i think i'll have to talk about lore separately but WOW.
the IX references (my favorites are Everkeep being the Iifa Tree, and Zoraal Ja pulling a Trance Kuja for his trial fight), the X references (the Pelupelu, and Living Memory being dream Zanarkand!), the surprise Type-0 reference (the living forgetting anyone who's died as "a kindness")… i can always do without the most explicit references (i'd have been happy if they'd just called Alexandria something else tbh), but i truly adore bringing back concepts and themes back in new ways that fit seamlessly into the new game's world, and they did a really great job with that.
and hot damn all of the zones are gorgeous. jaw-dropping, all of them. maybe bar Shaaloani, but even as a "worst" one, Shaaloani is good. i really truly didn't want to leave Canal Town. the music is incredible, no surprises there...
it's 2:36 am and i will stop here i think. but i really did have a good time overall :'3

Give me God of War!! (Ares OOAK, Part 1)
okay, you know, how craft works.
One day you've just become attached to GOW with ropes and tears. Another day you've decided in your head that you can't breath without any figure from this game.
You probably buy Kratos action figure (as I did) and probably feel yourself satisfied because your money are safe now (as I thought too! I can't have armored Kratos on his olympic throne, cause I don't have a third kidney, sadly, so I was very pleased with a little god Kratos figure (Neca). After fixing up paint on his face, I look at him and think ohw, you are gorgeous :зззззз).
So, you are moving forward, replay or rewatch god of war games, especially the first games... you are fine.
UNTIL you decide that you are an adept, who stans GOW Ares. You fire up this dump and can't live your life without Ares doll. Idol. I-doll.
If you are me, then you can understand. As Ares said, flesh burns, bones breaks, but putting man into making a custom doll is what truly destroys him. So I hugged my family to increase my level of rage and started. Now you can go under the cut
Actually, I wouldn't do it, but there is no GOW Ares figures in this cruel world at all. Sadly! He is beautiful red-haired war baby, isn't he?

And I like his original design more than the one we have in Ascension. (Althought I like his non-armored outfit (red chiton) from Ascension concept arts, which wasn't used). Anyway, if we want to have our own god of war, we have one way to figure it out.
Personally I've seen only one Ares OOAK in the internet. It was at Neca Kratos base and it was kinda fine. There was completely re-sculpted head, but the body was without any changes. Kratos in his slut era (thank you tumblr, you are the best) was really scraggy, so Ares with his thin waist looked funny 😅.
Well, anyway, Ares wasn't a thin reed and loved to hunch over, so we need to be canon.
I would say, I am not an OOAKer at all, I've just customized my own ball-joined dolls a couple of times, and I say it straightly, making Ares bjd would be nice, but it probably turns out to an endless torture for me and my finances. So for the base I decided to chose 1/6 scale action figure. I needed to harvest a head and a body. It is going to be a re-sculpted hybrid anyway, so we can ignore color difference and stuff. Yes, I devoted my heart and aliexpress account to Ares 🥲
Whoever recognized the head donor actor, well done x) A bit of alcohol and nail cutter for the eyes (it's varnish was undestructible, holy shit..) will manually wipe out his personality forever, bye
Beautiful face. But totally needs to be reworked. Ares has unique face features like a round forehead, wide mouth, full upper lip and a bit potato, but still hellenic nose (isn't it precious? 💕). Honestly I think Santa Monica made him really pleasing and beautiful man in his mature ages. He is not old, but you feel that he is not young too already.
So I took out my Ares iconostasis, which allows me to absorb his beauty from all angles, and started a portrait sculpting.
It was a little hell, but after letting all changes dry, I sanded it and tinted head using airbrush so it will be able to match a body color. Quick matching test:

As you can see, both body and head has a good tan skintone. And I know, Ares in GOW1 is as pale as Kratos.
Why am I not tinted him in ashy grey color? 1) It is night in a game, colors are faded because of it, 2) I tried and it looked messy, really... 3) I headcanon that both Ares and Kratos have the same reason for that: Ares is covered in ashes too. But Ares is not cursed, he is like.. always in contact with fire.

So I think that under this grey dust Ares has classic olive skin, same as Kratos. That's why I leave my Ares as if he was washed in a bath and get tidy like he is going to visit Aphrodite's chamber 💫. Anyway if I want to, I just can use photo filters to change it.
Okay, things become serious now.
We've finally reached to the face up.. And my working table lies in ruins and not usable anymore because of the fucking mess after previous steps.
God dammit on me and every single hair I drew in his eyebrows, but I have to say, it was really exciting to paint him. Finally give him his own gaze, brighten up his lips and cheeks. I didn't want to make him an angry bitch. Because he is not this person for me, neither in myths, nor in the game. He is a god, who lived through a lot of mortal lives and has seen a different kinds of.. chaos you know. OG Kratos is an infant compared to him I mean if you think of amount of past experience Ares has. Imho, he wasn't even truly angry at Kratos in GOW1. So I painted his expression how I feel and interpret his main emotional tone. Ares can be purely wrathful, but wrath is not cynical. That's what i think of him.
Okay, when the god became able to truly look after me, I couldn't hesistate and started to made the most iconic feature of him. His flaming hair and beard.
And I'll say it if you don't. I absolutely ❤ adore ❤ his red tousled mane ❤ .
(Just imagine Aphrodite tugging it or brushing, or just bury her face in his hair, because she knows that he will never burn her with his flames. I want to draw this now...)
I wanted his hair to be soft, easily combed and glowing without any electric lights. Gladly I've worked with a doll hair for a long time already.
Earlier I didn't cut off all of plastic hair from the head, only changed hairline by moving it a bit upper from his forehead. It was a part of the plan from the beginning. For the dolls I usually use very thin wool, and plastic mold will provide needed volume for his front combed strands. Screenshots before the eyes, two days of straggling (I wanted all hair to be removable without damaging varnish on his face) and we finally done.
And honestly I don't even want to shorten his hair. He is a perfection.

I really feel like Taash as a character potentially did more harm than good.
This isn't a dig at the writers themselves (especially Trick Weekes, because we know they are an objectively talented writer who knows the franchise). I blame any and all flaws on EA and Bioware and the undoubtedly short time frame given to rework and finish the game after laying people off.
It is baffling to me how... For example, the creators (I don't remember if it was Gaider or Weekes or someone else) said they didn't want to make Solas bi in order to avoid an evil bisexual trope. Personally I had never even heard of that trope, but it still goes to show the level of care and thoughtfulness going into the representation in these games. Mistakes undoubtedly were still made (i.e the incredibly problematic trans-panic sex workers in Origins) but they were learned from and even apologized for later (i.e with Krem and Maevaris)
So the switch to then making their first nonbinary character be basically an angry teen who is stubborn and confused and argumentative about their identity is like... just insane. That isn't to say people like that don't exist - I know people like that irl, hell I definitely used to be like that - but it's an incredibly harmful stereotype that is weaponized against trans people all the time! Having that be the first major representation given to nonbinary people in a triple A game is actively confirming hateful biases and beliefs against us. It could not have been a worse decision.
I personally don't think the diaspora storyline should have gone to Taash, either. I know it also feels very real to a lot of people and I respect that that story should exist in the game, just writing wise, it should not have gone to Taash. Mostly because they had to actively change the existing lore to make it work. This really offended me, personally, because the Qun specifically is one of my favorite topics to theorize and learn about. It is a horrible writing move. When you introduce a character who's part of one of the lesser known about factions in the world, like the Qunari, they should add to the known lore - Sten and Iron Bull both did this fantastically. Taash's backstory fumbles and confuses the Qunari lore at best, and completely changes it to fit their character at worst.
There are things I like about Taash. They're funny, I like the blunt and deadpan comments because they're a nice change of pace from the rest of the cast. Their visual design is gorgeous and I think their voice actor did an amazing job with what they were given to work with. I also love the concept of a nonbinary Tal-Vashoth and I think, at it's core, it could play with the themes of the Qun really nicely.
So here is my revamped version of Taash. They were born and raised as a woman under the Qun. As an adult, maybe they were more adept at combat and were re-assigned male (aqun-athlok), but didn't feel right in the role of a male warrior either. They left the Qun like so many others because they could not accept their assigned roles - in this specific case, because of their gender. Neither the male or female roles felt right to them. (And named themselves Ataashi, Taash for short, after what the Qunari call the dragons - literally translating to "glorious one")
Then, where does the diaspora/cultural struggles plotline go? I think it should go to Davrin! I feel like his struggles with Dalish identity are completely glossed over and I am honestly desperate for them to have expanded on that more. The Dalish altogether are glossed over in this game, honestly, which is a travesty considering how central the Evanuris are to the main plotline. If Davrin had a family member reach out to him (a parent, perhaps?) and try to convince him to return to the Dalish or something, and his difficult relationship with his culture was more explored, it would add so much to him as a character. He already mentions feeling like he didn't belong among the Dalish! He hints at dealing with similar criticisms that Taash canonically experiences from their mom! It would even further develop his struggles with raising Assan with a gentle hand, if his upbringing among the Dalish was established as not a kind one.
Anyways this is just the tip of the iceberg for me when it comes to this game. There are so many missed opportunities and botched storylines that I 100% blame on corporate bullshit. I think the game as it exists today only started production after the latest layoffs in 2023, and whatever work was done previously was scrapped in the name of making it more widely marketable. It's bullshit and we deserve better, especially queer fans

I haven’t gone back to rework the “Prologue” stuff in awhile, but I do have plenty of old and initial concept stuff regarding it! Gsdhjk It’s just not very shiny or updated per se ;v;
Basically, there was a point where Astral World was governed by three ‘artificial’ and powerful Guardians, each whom represented a different facet of life/energy.
Don Thousand (he had a different name at the time though), the “Soul” of Astral World, who governed the understanding of Chaos.
Protos, the “Heart” of Astral World, who governed the search and maintaining of Balance.
And, most recent to the group...
Eliphas. “Will” of the Astral World. Pursuer of Order and ideals of Ranking-Up.
Before Eliphas came along, Don and Protos got along swimmingly, and there was still a period of peace even after Eliphas’ creation and addition to the guardians. Protos considered them like his close friends. However, Eliphas and Don Thousand would butt heads a lot due to their polarizing views and ideals and pursuits etc, regarding chaos specifically. Protos did his best to keep the peace between them, but something was clearly escalating...

This is a near-incomprehensible pile of stuff relating to Protos’ design and place amongst the other two agshjk As for a gist of more the proper lore, here’s one of the initial plot breakdowns for pretty much what happened pre-canon in Astral World 🩵
Again, it’s rather dated, but I think most of it does still hold up to at least give a fair idea what occurred and what I was going for with all the pre-ZeXal context! ;v;

Hardest vid to edit?
Every vid is hard to edit in its own way :) I feel like the effects-heavy vids or the comics vids that require endless preprocessing always stick out in my mind, but at the moment I think my answer is "A Kind of Brother," my Critical Role Beau + Caleb vid. The actual process of putting the vid together wasn't that hard, but I worked and reworked it a lot to make a vid work that was 90% the same two people in the same static shot. (There was also a lot of boring technical work that went into making that same static shot not look like it was jumping around the screen, since the camera and players aren't exactly in the same spot between episodes.)
Why and when did you get started?
I've always loved fanvids, and I'd had fanvid ideas for years and years, and even tried to make a few, but never got very far, mostly because of the technical barrier. Then, in 2016, two things happened at the same time: I got Camtasia on my computer for work, and I got extremely into a web series (Lovely Little Losers) that was freely available on YouTube. The combination of having software readily available that I knew how to use and having ideas for a source that was very easy to procure made vidding a lot more achievable for me, and so I made my first vid! Later I started making my own web series, which meant that I got better editing software and learned a lot about the technical side of things, so the entire process started to feel a lot less overwhelming, and that's when I started vidding in earnest.
Does the music you use for fanvids overlap with the music you listen to casually? Why or why not?
Sometimes but not always. My most used artists are Kesha, Taylor Swift, Metric, and Arcade Fire, and I do listen to those people casually, and often get ideas for vids from songs that I've heard a lot. But sometimes I have a source or vid that I want to make, and I go in search of a song for it, which usually results in a vid to a song I would probably never listen to independently. See the above Critical Role vid—that came from a long and exhaustive search for a song that captured the extremely specific dynamic that Beau and Caleb have with each other. I eventually settled on "Blood Brothers" by The Tyde, a song and band I'd never heard of before. I think it's a good song, and I listen to it casually now (because it's on my Beau & Caleb playlist) but I've checked out the band's other music and it mostly doesn't click for me.
Is there a vid that you have watched/rewatched that has inspired you or informed the way you make vids?
So, so many. Raven's TNG/DS9 vid "disappear" was hugely influential when I first started vidding in earnest, and really helped to shape my idea of the kind of vidder that I wanted to be. "Women's Work" by luminosity and sisabet was one of the first vids I ever saw, and gave me the idea of fanvids as critical essays that can say something about their sources. @monkeyswithjetpacks' "The Ballad of Wesley Crusher" is a tour de force of side character study, and I basically outright stole the sequence of Wesley looking at the different view screens from behind for my Good Place vid. Bironic's "Starships" introduced me to the concept of massively multifandom vids (and her notes helped me figure out that adjusting the speed of certain clips might make my vids flow better). "Gasoline" by garrideb was my introduction to comics vidding, and I'm still trying to capture the fluidity she gives to the medium in it. I probably watch "Seven Years" by CherryIce every other month, both because it's gorgeous and I love it, and because I want to figure out how she did it so that I can do it myself. I'm probably forgetting a dozen more.

so I was thinking that when I bring home Tiana, I'm going to turn her into a created historical because I think she's a gorgeous doll but I have no attachment to the movie, character, or Disney (I might sell her meet dress since I don't think I can get her in her work dress instead), I'm not sure where she's going to go but while I work it out, I'm thinking she can hang out with Claudie
inspired by @queer-nanea-mitchell, I was thinking of moving Isabel backwards in time and reworking her character. going back a 100 years would make it 1899 (or 1900) which is very close to Sam, but if I go back 200 years, that's 1799 (or 1800) and I already have Marie-Grace slotted to relocate to Philadelphia in 1793, so I'll have to keep thinking
Oh, I could have her somewhere between 1829 and 1840 during the Georgia Gold Rush, maybe?
Nicki, I think I would turn into a modern character (with her hair streaks, I'm kind of limited unless I rewig her which I suppose is an idea)
I would still need to put someone else into the '90s because I don't object to the concept of a 90s doll, merely the execution

go nuts babes
first up: broad concepts that allow for specific ideas to form
ponies with talents related to the care of / research surrounding specific animals (cats, dogs, birds, rodents, etc)
^ and those babies have GOT to have funny pun names. things like Feline Fine, Hot (Diggety) Dog, Twitterpated, or anything of that ilk
common holiday-themed ponies! (proof that this is a good idea: halloween ponies are always gorgeous and we need more mlp holiday representation)
retail job workers. HEAR ME OUT:
^ ponies whose jobs center around teaching others how to hold a job not specific to their talent. ponies who are naturally inclined to retail / food service and welcome in a positive environment.
music genre ponies! and you can get real specific with it! (i'm waiting for the day a "music that turns you into a bug" pony exists)
reworks of older generation ponies - this can vary from slight appearance changes to complete rehauls. rainbow dash did it, so can you!
ponies with heightened senses tailored to certain sensory careers. examples: perfume makers, wine tasters, music tuners, etc.
now, onto more specific ideas:

Today is Eirene's birthday and I am delighted to have this high resolution picture of hers! There is just so much I could never fully see in detail before - such as how her original 'dragon' concept from the beta art is still there. She has a dragon-shaped brooch (holding her cape to the dress), an earring on her right ear and also appears to be the inspiration for the bracelets on her right arm. I also think this is why she wears this crown and has these fun decorations on the left side of her dress (like a 'tail' of sorts). This has left me pondering if any of these motifs remain - most of her concept and in-game quotes were entirely reworked to chess things (including her alternate skin - even her swimsuit is in chess colors!) and I do think she's more of a chessmaster/queen-coded character, but these details are simply gorgeous!

First time in at least a decade and with the newer edition but I read it many times as a teenager
Wow this aged. Or I did. Great nostalgia bomb but oh boy is it 90's flavored. Written from 91-96 I can easily see where a lot of the influence and writing style come from. I wish they went harder on Nuriko being trans instead of pulling that back at the last moment. There is some gorgeous art in there.
Yui spends half the series being a massive bitch and I just dont think it ever felt justified. Like maybe if you give it a hella yuri/unrequited love toward Miaka but it is exceptionally straight and just too intense in Yui's hatred. She is much better written in the second half but also barely there.
There's some ick about virginity and purity. There's a lot of bad pacing, questionable fan service, fat jokes, and constant attempts at humor that just dont land. Like Miaka's obsession with food literally every scene. Life or death situation? Food. Sex? Food. People dying? Food. I get that it's meant as humor but nope -_-;;
Score with nostalgia 6/10. I did enjoy that trip down memory lane and the art still holds up. Score without nostalgia goggles is gonna end up closer to a 4. The concepts and art are good. With a modern reworking with pacing and the food obsession toned down it could be way better.

First thing that comes to mind is a jessleto magical realism AU I developed a bit with @madisoncounty a while back. It requires a level of worldbuilding that I do not know how to commit to and also takes place over like 15 years, and I think I'm more likely to rework that concept into an original project at this point (if I can make myself do that after a six-year hiatus) but god it would be gorgeous.

No but for real I’m so salty dude cause I’m trying to at least trying to rationalise why her design was reworked into Aromatisse, like as much as think she also serves a bit, her design is just a MESS of inspiration. She’s meant to be a masquarade attendee but also a cancan dance and also a perfume bottle?? Like it’s too much. But with miss Diva I immediately guessed she was a flamenco dancer due to her head feathers looking a bun and her wings looking like a flamenco fan . I can’t stress enough how much of a stroke of genius of a design it was. The ONLY reason why it might’ve got cut is that Flamenco is not a French dance while can can is. But then again I don’t remember any Pandas being native to France either .
right?? i've never liked aromatisse much but i couldn't say why other than it's just a little boring to me... but maybe that's because its design is trying to do so much at once that it ends up not being great at any of it 😭 with this flamenco pokemon it's very clear what the inspiration is and things like the beak resembling castanets and the wings looking like a flamenco fan are so clever!! i also find it a lot more interesting than flamigo--some people say flamigo is a boxing glove, some say lawn ornament, and some say balloon animal, but i remember that when i first saw it, i didn't even notice the knot in its neck and thought it was just a normal flamingo... the flamenco flamingo beta design is gorgeous and immediately stands out!
and, to add to your last point, we've also gotta remember that hawlucha is based on luchadors and birds found in mexico, oricorio has four different forms based on dance styles from around the world (one of those even being flamenco!), and unova was already full of pokemon based on animals that aren't native to the US--zebstrika comes to mind. pokemon designs taking cultural inspiration from the region's real-world equivalent is always cool but it's never been a strict requirement, so i really don't know why gamefreak cut this design!! this is why i wish pokemon games had making of books so the devs could have a chance to talk about cut concepts and beta designs.
